Palling

Summer retreat in the country

With the Bildungshaus Klostergut Harpfetsham, one of the greatest calvary mountains in East Bavaria and jewels of old Bavarian folk culture, Palling is the ideal place to recharge your batteries for body, mind and soul.

Natural and cultural monuments

Surrounded by larger forest areas and beautiful destinations, the town of Palling is ideal for relaxing stays and long walks or bike rides. Picturesquely embedded in the landscape on a slight hill, the listed monastery estate of Harpfetsham from 1732 is in demand today as a training center and place for physical, mental and spiritual revitalization. Bundwerkstadel here, as well as in the area around Palling, give an insight into the artistic construction technology of earlier times, which is typical for the region. As a natural monument and witness to the Ice Age, the mighty "Bitterstein" in a wooded area south of Brünning already served as a place of worship for the Celts. This is indicated by finds with sun symbols. Don't miss the performances at the Heimatbühne Palling in autumn, whose folk theater plays draw visitors from near and far.

Local History Palling

Findings of a battle ax from the Neolithic period, as well as finds from Roman and Celtic times suggest that Palling was settled at an early stage. Rows of graves in the area and finds in the town center indicate traces of the Bavarians. In 788 the town with its own church was first mentioned as "Baldilingas" in records of Bishop Arn von Salzburg. In 1810 the town came together with the Rupertigau from the possession of Salzburg to the Kingdom of Bavaria. An old boundary stone between Brünning and Weißenkirchen still reminds us of this today. In 1893 Palling got a hospital, which is now used as a nursing and old people's home. In 1978 Palling was enlarged as part of local government reform.

Pallinger personalities

As extreme climbers, world record holders and internationally successful alpinists, Alexander and Thomas Huber have written books and climbing history. The two athletes, known as "Huber-Buam", grew up in Palling.

Palling in winter

Palling also has a lot to offer in the cooler season. On the western outskirts of the town, the Pallinger Calvary sits enthroned on a hill with a crucifixion group in the style of historicism and its own grave grotto from 1888. According to the monuments office, it is one of the most impressive buildings of this type in all of East Bavaria and is a special testimony to Bavarian popular piety. A Rosary Way and a Way of the Cross with 14 cast-iron stations lead to Calvary. Known as the "Römerstein" is a stately tombstone with a Latin inscription and a pattern of dolphins, which can be seen in the church in Freutsmoos. The herbs of the Chiemgauer Genussfaktur, which you can buy here in the shop, also come from this district of Palling. As the epitome of Bavarian hospitality, the traditional Gasthof Michlwirt is known nationwide. If there is enough snow, Palling invites you to go cross-country skiing on extensive trails.
