Ruhpolding
Lean back and be amazed in the most natural cinema in the Chiemgau-AreaRuhpolding local history
For centuries, timber was the most important economic basis in the Ruhpolding valley. The abundance of forest served to supply the saltworks in Traunstein. In the 1930s, mass tourism experienced holiday trains run by travel entrepreneur Dr. Carl Degener a steep upswing. The "fastest mountain railway in Germany" (1953), its own ski factory and the first cross-country skis with scales (Plenk) as well as the construction of the biathlon stadium promoted Ruhpolding's rise as a popular winter sports resort.
Ruhpolding personalities
Anyone who says Ruhpolding cannot ignore Fritz Fischer (born 1956). The Olympic champion, sports award winner and long-standing national coach is one of the biathlon veterans at the Ruhpolding base. With his biathlon camp, the humorous man from Kelheim has done a great job in promoting young people and spreading the sport of biathlon. No less popular is the Wahlruhpoldinger and one of the most successful German biathlon athletes Ricco Groß (born 1970, four times Olympic gold and nine times world champion).
