Local history of Waging am See

The first traces of settlement in the Waginger Tal date back to the Celtic period. The name Waging is derived from "Wago", the head of a Bavarian settlement. Around 720, the place came into church possession as a gift from Salzburg. It was not until 1810 that Bavaria regained the town by the lake. In 1777 the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stopped here on his journey from Salzburg to Munich. In the 1950s, special train trips by the later TUI co-founder Wilhelm Scharnow caused a tourism miracle in the town. In the 1980s, culinary artist Alfons Schuhbeck made the Kurhausstüberl a meeting place for dazzling celebrities.

Anecdote

Former mayor and visionary Sebastian Schuhbeck (1913-2007) is considered the “father of the tourism miracle”. The passionate art collector and restaurateur made the place attractive for rail travelers after the end of the war and opened up the current site at the beach campsite with the spa house for tourism.
