Tour description:
The long bike ride starts in Grassau at Kirchplatz. Begin your ride heading towards Moosbacher Straße. After about 1 km, turn left off Moosbacher Straße (along the brook) towards Hindling. At the Raab riding farm, keep left towards the moor educational trail and Rottau. On the mountain side you can see (to the left) from afar the Klaushäusl Museum “Salt & Moor.” To the right begins the moor adventure trail. Before Rottau you have two options to continue. Either straight on through Rottau or turn right towards the water-treading basin, Rottau sports field, and peat railway station (Bavarian Moor and Peat Museum).
If you head straight for the peat railway station, you save a few kilometers. The two routes—one through the flower village Rottau, the other via the Rottau sports field to the popular water-treading basin—meet again at the outskirts of Rottau before the “Farbinger Hof.” Through a shady forest path, after about 1.5 km you reach the Munich–Salzburg railway line. Follow this to the right and you come on a narrow path through moor and forest landscape to the Bavarian Moor and Peat Museum, the Rottau peat railway station. A field path continues straight for almost 2 km. Now comes the only, but steep, incline on the entire ride. You might even have to dismount here. However, the incline is quite short, and soon you will be rewarded with a wonderful view on Westerbuchberg. Also visit the well-known little church “St. Peter and Paul” from the early Middle Ages. Two inns invite you to linger. On the east side of Westerbuchberg, at the inn “Schöne Aussicht,” you can take a shortcut to Grassau—via Mietenkam, Grafing—you save about 3 km. Your long route descends again from Westerbuchberg, crosses the state road into the Überseer district Bachham. Then continue via Almau to the Tiroler Ache. Follow this upstream to the right. On the nicely developed dam you arrive after about 2 km in the district “Im Erlach.” Here is the last opportunity to shorten your ride by returning to Grassau via Weiher and Grafing, saving around 3 km. The long ride continues along the river. Via Nachmühle (from here it’s only about 1 km to the Golf Resort Achental) you reach Staudach. You ride under the big bridge and follow the dam until you reach the municipality of Marquartstein. At the Marquartstein fire station, turn right and pass a discount store to the federal highway. Please cross this carefully and follow the “genial vital” markings towards Pettendorf, Piesenhausen, and Niederfels. There turn right and return to Grassau via beautiful field paths over Großrachl and Fünfeichenweg.
