The Chiemgau-Area is a historical and cultural landscape with Lake Chiemsee in the centre. The name "Chiemgau" has been documented since the 8th century. After the Romans retreated, the Bavarians spread. The Carolingians influenced the region, as did King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Monasteries had a formative influence on the landscape design. Salt and the wealth associated with it also left their mark on the Chiemgau-Area. All of these factors played a part in developing distinctive traditions in the region that endure to this day. If you want to know what the Chiemgau-Area is and what makes it special, you can't ignore customs and traditions.
