Tour description:

The St. Rupert pilgrimage route connects the places where St. Rupert worked, sacred places steeped in legend and artistic testimonies to his worship. The eventful common history of Salzburg and the Rupertiwinkel can be felt everywhere. But it also invites you on mostly non-asphalted hiking trails to an adventure trip with all your senses through the history of the region, through beautiful lake and mountain landscapes in south-eastern Bavaria and in the Salzburger Land.

On a journey with the namesake of the Rupertiwinkel

The St. Rupert pilgrimage route begins in the pilgrimage center in Altötting. Rupert is said to have brought the worship of Mary here with the gospel. We continue in a southerly direction via the Salzach town of Tittmoning with the home of the Rupertiwinkel in the castle and the pilgrimage church of Maria Brunn. The path then leads to the northern tip of Lake Tachinger with the pilgrimage church of St. Coloman, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over Lake Tachinger and Lake Waginger as far as the Alps. The pilgrimage route runs southwards via Taching, Waging am See with the Bajuwarenmuseum to the district of Gaden with an extraordinary St. Rupert Church. The namesake of the pilgrimage route is said to have celebrated a Holy Mass here. To the east, an alternative route of the pilgrimage path branches off and leads via Petting, the Schönramer Filz, the Salzach town of Laufen, Oberndorf, Seekirchen, one of Rupert's first foundations, to St. Gilgen with a connection to the St. Rupert pilgrimage path, which has existed since 2007 to Bischofshofen.

The route continues south past the pilgrimage churches of Mariae Heimsuchung on the Mühlberg and Maria Tanne to the salt pan town of Traunstein. Not only the educational and retreat house St. Rupert, the salt works chapel St. Rupert and Maximilian and the Rupertus fountain remind of the namesake of the pilgrimage route. The city was a center of the salt industry at that time and owed its rise and wealth to the salt trade and salt processing. The pilgrim route runs south through Siegsdorf and on to the well-known alpine village of Inzell. Here the path joins the Salinenweg, which marks the course of the oldest pipeline in the world. With this wooden pipeline, the salt dissolved in water from the Berchtesgaden Alps was transported to Traunstein and later to Rosenheim and evaporated again in the brewing pans there or the salt was recovered. From Inzell, the path continues through the Berchtesgadener Land via Weißbach, Bad Reichenhall with the St. Rupert chapel directly at the industrial monument of salt history, the old salt works. Almost every church and a monumental fresco on the old town hall show the great importance of Rupert for the salt and spa town. From there, the pilgrimage route via Piding, Ainring and Freilassing approaches its destination, the Mozart city of Salzburg with the Bishop's seat and the reliquary grave of Saint Rupert.
