Traditional mountain huts

Your snack is already waiting

When the last snow has melted on the mountain hut (Alm), the farmers from the valley bring their cattle to the alpine hut (Alm). There, the Senner or Sennerin (herdsman/woman) look after the cattle and the hikers who come by for a snack until the cattle are driven from the Mountain in September (Almumtrieb).

Bacon bread, fresh alpine cheese, cheese dumplings, plum dumplings and elder lemonade ... most people will have their mouth watering on this menu. The selection is large and depends on whether it is a traditional alpine hut or a mountain inn - or something in between. In all cases, the bank in front of the hut becomes a meeting point for everyone who appreciates the view, the warm atmosphere and the typical alpine snack. The opening hours of the mountain huts are noted below, please mind that the weather may cause the opening hours to vary. If unsure, please contact the local Tourist Information office for confirmation.

Alpine huts are sensitive habitats. Humans and animals are thankful to whoever treats them with respect.

Mountain huts everywhere

For a visit to an alpine hut, you have to put on hiking shoes, pack your backpack and start walking. Here is a selection of the most beautiful hikes as well as particularly child-friendly alpine huts with a petting zoo or playground. In addition, a guide to when the alpine pastures are open. Please note that life on the mountian huts is very dependent on the weather. If in doubt, we recommend contacting the local tourist information office.
