The Benediktweg leads you through beautiful natural landscapes with hamlets, moors, lakes and views of the Alps. Pretty places and historic towns with castles, palaces, monasteries and churches invite you to visit. The namesake of the cycle path Pope em. Benedict XVI spent his childhood and youth in this blessed corner of the earth . On the route there are idyllic chapels, crosses, shrines and shrines as small oases of peace and quiet.

From the town of Tittmoning to Waginger See

There is an important station on the stage through the Chiemgau: Tittmoning , a former Salzburg trading town , was the place of residence of the Ratzinger family. With the baroque Augustinian church and the baroque pilgrimage church Maria Brunn, idyllically situated in the Polnachgraben, the city is said to have always remained the dreamland of the former Pope's childhood. You can also visit the medieval castle and the long town square in the Inn-Salzach style.

At the warmest lake in Upper Bavaria, the Waginger See , you can take a break: Here the wellness garden with sauna area and hotel, as well as three lidos, numerous cafes and shops invite you. There are two idyllic places of pilgrimage on the way from Waging to Traunstein: The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Mühlberg not only offers a fantastic panoramic view of the foothills of the Alps, but also houses one of the largest votive tablets in south-eastern Bavaria. The Church of St. Leonhard in Wonneberg is a real insider tip for art connoisseurs with its historically valuable high altar and early baroque wall and ceiling paintings.

Heart of the Chiemgau - the town of Traunstein

After a ride on well-paved bike paths you reach Traunstein , the heart of the Chiemgau. Joseph Ratzinger spent his youth here. The city is young and modern and yet you breathe history everywhere. While the old town stands out with its beautiful coffee houses, the parish church of St. Oswald and the town square with the Lindl fountain and Jackl tower are among the most important sights.

On the shore of the Bavarian Sea

The Benediktweg leads from the pulsating city to the east bank of the Chiemsee . On the way, a detour to the late Gothic church in Sondermoning is worthwhile. In Chieming , the promenade, lido and cafes invite you. You can take the Chiemsee ships to the islands from here. In the nearby idyllic church village of Ising, the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary greets you, which is considered the true “pearl of the Chiemgau” with its precious rococo furnishings.

From Seebruck , the largest sailing port on Lake Chiemsee , the Benediktweg continues to Seeon . With its picturesque location on an island, the monastery is one of the most magical places in northern Chiemgau. The monastery church of St. Lambert with its unique Renaissance paintings on the ceiling is a true picture book of art history. It is in keeping with the spirit of Seeon that the church is open during the day and can be visited by guests. From Seeon, the path leads back to the shore of Lake Chiemsee in Gstadt , from where you can take a detour to the nearby islands.
