Lakes and sea in historic Seeon-Seebruck

As a former Roman settlement on Lake Chiemsee, Seeon-Seebruck offers water experiences, natural beauty as well as historical and cultural highlights and thus optimal opportunities for an active holiday.

History to touch

On the archaeological circular trail, in the Roman Museum or at historical festivals, guests experience the life of the Celts and Romans more than 2,000 years ago up close and authentically. A large number of public works of art, including the prominent sculpture trail and the museum by Heinrich Kirchner, testify to the inspiring power of the scenic beauty.

The best way to explore the cultural and natural highlights is by leisurely cycling on well-maintained paths. Comfortable family tours in a rubber dinghy or organized raft trips on the Alz should not be missed. The large marina in Seebruck is the right address for sailing trips. Bathing fun is guaranteed in the lido with a large sunbathing area. During the summer months, the Chiemsee steamers travel from the port via Chieming to Herreninsel and Fraueninsel.

Seeon-Seebruck local history

Seeon-Seebruck with its three districts is an ancient settlement and cultural area. There are some nationally significant archaeological monuments from prehistoric and early historical times. “Bedaium” (Seebruck) is also one of the best-researched Roman towns in Bavaria. The Seeon monastery was founded in 994, and its famous writing school received commissions from Emperor Heinrich II. Later, the musicians Haydn and Mozart even lodged here for a long time. From 1852 to 1934 the monastery was owned by the Dukes of Leuchtenberg. Since 1993 it has been the cultural and educational center of the district of Upper Bavaria. The feudal knights of Truchtlaching were in charge in the late Middle Ages. They were officials of the Archbishop of Salzburg and the Count Palatine of Crainburg. In 1347, Emperor Ludwig left the customs collection at the Alzbrücke to the Truchtlachingen knights.

Seebruck anecdotes

Flamingosare spotted at the Chiemsee again and again. It is not clear where they come from. According to experts, these could be birds from the surrounding zoos. Chiemsee fisherman: a 1.70 meter long catfish became known as the last big catch. (Homer Lex, Chiemsee fisherman) World champion in long-distance curling:on December 9, 1989, a 4.8-kilogram curling stone was thrown 566.53 meters at Lake Seeon – unbeaten to this day. Toboggan rides: the Seeoner See is not only attractive in summer due to its beautiful location as a bathing lake, but also in winter when the lake is frozen. Due to its shallow depth, maximum 18 meters, this happens frequently. An old saying of the locals is: "Only when the lake barks should you go up there!"
